The diagnostic pigment Gyroxanthin-diester is now available enabling cost effective detection of dinoflagellates ravaging fish farms
DHI Water & Environment is now offering a spectrally pure standard for the analysis of Gyroxanthin-diester, the pigment unique for toxic dinoflagellates such asGymnodinium谕令,Gymnodinium mikimotoi Gymnodinium galatheanum. The standard is especially suitable for the calibration of High Pressure Liquid Chromatography (HPLC)-instruments. Using the HPLC technique enables quick and cheap detection and quantification of these harmful toxic algae both in nature and in experiments.
Detection of toxic algae is crucial to fish farmers and managers of aquacultures. Occurrences of these noxious planktonic organisms may cause huge economic losses and endanger human health. Dramatic impact on freshwater and marine ecosystem is also evident when natural flora and fauna are hampered or killed due to massive blooms.
Toxic algae are usually detected by microscopy and this approach is still necessary for identification at species level. However, the unique presence of Gyroxanthin-diester makes it easy and reliable to detect potential danger at an early stage and to closely follow the development in algal growth. Regular analysis of water samples taken near fish farms can help preventing catastrophic disasters, particularly at sites where the Gymnodinium species cause recurrent problems.

DHI Water & Environment carries out HPLC analyses of Gyroxanthin-diester as well as all other diagnostic algal pigments and chlorophylls. The Institute is authorised to perform the analyses by the Danish Accreditation Body. All analyses are calibrated using spectrally pure pigment standards. The standards may also be purchased from DHI for analyses in your own laboratory. For further information visit our homepage (www.c14.dhi.dk) or contact us atc14@dhi.dk.

DHI Water & Environment also supplies an array of services on design, management and maintenance of aquacultures, e.g. monitoring (design and conduction), early warning systems, impact assessment and zero-discharge designs. The Institute offers models developed for the forecasting of algal blooms.
With special reference to toxic algae, DHI supplies services on early warning, situation assessment and management plans in both marine and freshwaters. Our biological laboratory carries out toxin analyses of selected toxins.
